William Creech Sr. donated land for the purpose of establishing a school to educate mountain people. Over 100 years later, his dream continues to come true! Pine Mountain Settlement School began as a boarding school for area children. Today, the school operates as a non-profit with the mission of enriching people and enhancing lives through Appalachian place-based education for all ages.
Groups travel to the school to immerse themselves in Appalachian culture, experience the unmatched beauty of Pine Mountain, and marvel at the striking architecture of the historic buildings.
Day Visits
.Pine Mountain Settlement School hosts special events throughout the year that attract day visitors. Whether you’re celebrating sorghum at their annual Fair Day or Christmas with their Nativity Play, your visit will be unforgettable. You don’t need a special occasion to enjoy the beauty of the campus. The historic campus is open year round from sun-up to sun-down. It is a popular destination for hikers, photographers, or anyone seeking some peace in the mountains.
Overnight Visits
Pine Mountain Settlement School welcomes overnight visitors and is prepared to handle anything from a family getaway to a group retreat. Host your meetings in their community spaces and allow their farm to table kitchen handle the meals! Accommodations range from cozy cabins to dormitory style halls. The staff can work with you to offer the experiences you’re seeking whether it be guided hikes, Appalachian arts, or an old fashioned folk dance. Work with the staff at PMSS to build a memorable stay in the mountains!
