Wilderness First Aid
Janaury 2020 / Pine Mountain Settlement School

Wilderness First Aid (WFA) is the perfect course for the outdoor enthusiast or trip leader who wants a basic level of first aid training for short trips with family, friends, and outdoor groups. It also meets the American Camp Association guidelines. Students must be 14 years of age or older to participate. The WFA is 16 hours long (two days), and focuses on the basic skills of: Response and Assessment, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Environmental Emergencies, Survival Skills, Soft Tissue Injuries, and Medical Emergencies. $200 includes tuition, meals, and lodging. Additional $35 if you register to take the CPR certification.

Our next Mountain Market is right around the corner! Be sure to reserve your booth space for February 1st, 2020 at the Harlan Center. At the Harlan Center's Mountain Market, we want to give you a place to sell all of the things you don't want anymore or if you're a crafter or vendor and you want to set up at the beginning of the year when resolutions are abound then this is the event for you! The cost for one booth space is $10.

Pine Mountain Settlement School is hosting its annual Wildflower Weekend April TBA. During this program, folks of all ages will participate in guided hikes along our forested trails, eat farm-fresh meals, and enjoy the beauty and relaxation of this environment.

Southern Rock Racing $50,000 UTV Bounty Series
TBD / Harlan County Campground

Twenty Five Off-Road Buggies will compete on 5 hill climbs to determine who will win the cash prizes. The fifth hill will be near impossible to climb so expect plenty of tumbling, flipping, and crashes. Off-Road Vendors and Food vendors will be on site. $25 dollar admission to watch at the gate and kids 10 & under are free. No off-road vehicle needed to watch, you can park your car/truck at the event area.

Tadpole Derby on Looney Creek Trail
TBA / Black Bear Gazebo on Main St in Cumberland, KY

Get a jump on spring and ride the Tadpole Derby along the Loonery creek Trail. This event is planned as a casual and fun ride. The distance of the ride is about 5 miles, from the Black Bear Gazebo to the Benham Park and back. The ride will be at a leisurly pace and easy enough for any skill level. We encourage everyone to wear a helmet for your own protection. Download the registration from here:

Tour De Kingdom Come
TBA / Kingdom Come State Park

This 36-mile race bgeins and ends at Kingdom Come State Park Lake. Don't have a bike? Then come out and watch as riders attempt the final climb up to the park! Awards for each age division, fastest male and female will receive special awards. Every rider who finishes the final clum in under 17 minutes will earna special polka dot t-shirt. This is round one of the Eastern KYVA Cycling Rally Circuit.

Southern Shine Crawl

The Harlan County Outdoor Recreation Board will be teaming up with the Kentucky Mountain Crawlers and the East Coast Off Road Racing Series for this years Southern Shine Crawl.

Poke Sallet Festival
June 4th-6th, 2020 / Downtown Harlan, KY

The Poke Sallet Festival is Harlan County's oldest continuous festival and also Harlan County's biggest festival! The festival always takes place on the first full weekend in June and is filled with food, contests, live music, carnival, a challenging 5k, the miss Harlan County Pageant and much more!



Str8t Up SXS Series Race

A couple of dozen 4wd off-road buggies and SXS's will compete in uphill head to head drag races and hill climbs for cash prizes. Expect plenty of tumbling, flipping, and crashes. Fun Filled Fourth Fest

Black Bear 5k
July 2020 / Cumberland, KY

This Independence Day weekend make sure you make your way to Cumberland for the new and improved Black Bear 5k Run! The date and location have changed but the fun has not! Runners will begin at Coal Miners Memorial Park in Benham, continue to Cumberland Elementary School, and then return to the park. Annual Bear Crawl Obstacle Mud Run
TBA 2020 / Benham, KY

Starts at Benham Little League Field, 140 Kentucky Ave. Benham, Ky. 40807. Onsite registration begins at 7:00 a.m. and race at 9:00 a.m. Entry fee is $25.00 per person, and teams of 4 people or more get a $5.00 discount per person.

Black Bear Bike Night
Black Bear Bike Night was created for the local motorcycle enthusiasts to have an event to meet with other motorcycle enthusiasts and enjoy games, music, food and hospitality with other bikers. Since the first one in 2009 was a success it was opened to allow cars and trucks to be a part of the event as well. Many people who don't ride motorcycles come and enjoy looking at the many beautiful bikes, as well as the cars and trucks. The 2016 season dates are:

During each Bike Night, we have a motorcycle show and give out trophies for the winners of each category: Best Sports, Harley, Paint, Metric, Trike and Best of Show. To all the visitors coming into our area, you can experience the beautiful mountains and travel our winding roads. You can also check out our website for more of the attractions in the Tri-City area. So come and enjoy our 2016 season of Black Bear Bike Night. There is no registration fee.

Harlan Haunt Fest is a pop-culture/horror convention and festival in the mountains of Harlan County, Kentucky that features meeting genre celebrities from film, TV, music, art, and literature. Festival of the Mountain Masters

The Festival of the Mountain Masters is an award winning authentic handcraft show that displays the work of local artisans in the Southeast region. It is a wonderful festival full of great handmade items that make wonderful Christmas gifts for the whole family. There is also live entertainment, food, contests, and much more!
