If you are like us, we love taking adventures with our furriest friend and Harlan County offers a wide variety of pet friendly activities! Load up some water, treats, you and your best boy or girl and find out all of the adventures awaiting you in Harlan County!
- Take your dog on a walk around huff park. The walking track around Huff Park is perfect for the active dogs that wanna keep on moving. You can run as fast as you can, or go on a nice walk with your furry friend. Just remember to be courteous and pick up after them.
- Visit the City of Harlan Dog Park for you and your dog to socialize. There is plenty of room here for your dog to run around and get all of their energy out. Feel free to run around with them as much as you want or sit on one of the benches and watch as your dog runs and plays in the grass. You can always take a picnic for yourself or grab lunch from one of our favorite restaurants around town like Sports Cafe, The Portal, or Moonbow!
- Take your dog to one of the lakes in Harlan such as Cranks Creek Lake or Martins Fork Lake. Whether you and your dog like to just relax on the beach, run around, or get in the water, you can have tons of fun at the lake with your pet. Don’t forget to bring a frisbee to throw around! Does your littlest best friend enjoy kayaking or canoeing? Take them out on the water at Martin’s Fork Lake so they can enjoy this beautiful man made lake in the heart of Appalachia.
- Take a hike! Your furriest friend will enjoy our mountains just as much as you will by visiting Kingdom Come State Park or Little Shepherd Trail and hiking to some beautiful locations. We recommend making sure you take some water for both you and your furry friend.
- Go on a walk to South Main St to visit Jillian’s Pet Grooming. You can keep your furry friend looking their best when you take a trip down here, and it is a great way to pamper your dog.
- Take a stroll up to Cumberland, KY and visit the dog park in the Tri-Cities! Sometimes our furry tailed best friends need a change of scenery just like we do and Cumberland’s dog park is a great place to socialize and meet new friends. You can also grab a quick lunch for yourself while your dog is playing at Hometown Heroes or Sasquatchi Hibachi!
- Take a drive on the Dragon Slayer HWY 160 with the windows down and let your best friend hang its head out the window while enjoying fresh air and the winding mountain roads. Pro-tip: your dog could be the highest elevated dog in the state of Kentucky for a moment by visiting the highest point in Kentucky on this drive at Big Black Mountain with an elevation of 4,145ft!
- Maybe your furry friend and you enjoy fishing together! If so, we highly recommend going to Highsplint Lake and fishing with your best buddy. Highsplint Lake is where the Kentucky state record largemouth bass originated. Your pet can stay cool in the water while you fish (if you don’t mind your buddy disturbing the water while you’re trying to fish that is!).
- Let you and your pet become tourists in Harlan by taking the downtown walking tour in the City of Harlan that starts at the Harlan Center. Your best friend and you will walk all over town while discovering lots of interesting information about Harlan County.
- Pet Photoshoot! Take your dog to all of the locations around Harlan County where you take photos and selfies and let your best friend have their 15 minutes of fame! We recommend the Umbrella Alley, Petunia the Opossum, the wildflower mural in downtown Cumberland, seasonal decor, or any of our natural assets in Harlan County make for an incredible backdrop for photos!
- One of the coolest locations that you and your best friend can visit in Harlan County is Pine Mountain Settlement School. This treasure on Pine Mountain is like taking a step back in time and there is plenty of space for you and your pet to run and play! Be sure to visit their coffee shop while on campus for a treat for yourself and pup cup for your furry friend!
- Did you and your best friend get tuckered out on all of your adventures in Harlan County? Kick back and relax at the Harlan County Beer Company at their back porch. You can enjoy some food and beverages and your best friend can rest and lap up some water in one of the coolest new spots in downtown Harlan.
- Be sure to bring your best friend by the visitor’s center at the Harlan Center! We always have time to stop and scratch some ears and tell your pet what a good boy or girl they are!
